Add your thoughts using the KWL approach. Thinking about Game Mechanics, Games-Based Learning or gamification.....
K = What do you know? Games can be used in teaching to encourage students to learn and complete tasks. W = What do you want to learn? How to engage my students best using games and other activities. L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later)
The difference between gamification and games based learning.
Reflection
Add your thoughts here and also add to the KWL notes above, where appropriate.
Level 2
Where do I start?
Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.
Creating a background story to some of my teaching will help to engage the students.
By keeping rules simple of the games and allowing them to score points/rewards easily will encourage all students and possibly create less failure.
Important to test out the game as well before fully implementing. Get rid of any faults or problems.
Observe and reflect After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?
Level 3
Premiers Reading Challenge Reflection
According to the rubric, the Premiers Reading Challenge is classified as a gamification. This is due to no real narrative or emotion involved, little progression, and some interaction could be used in relationships. The rules are quite structured and tasks are set, meaning that the fun elements are not necessarily part of the game.
Zombie Learning Reflection
This is much more centered around Games Based Learning. It allows for progression and a narrative or story to be introduced or created. It also allows emotions and much less constraints as the scope and sequence is quite broad for the students. I think this would be great for some students and certain topics.
You Try/ A final reflection
I have found it difficult to think of something I can use in my own teaching at present but I feel that this course has helped me have more open ideas about using games in my teaching. I think an easy way for me to start might be to set up goals and rewards for completion of certain activities in my lessons. As a PDHPE teacher, the students could look at their diets and then be rewarded based on the amounts of foods they eat over a time frame. This could also be done by setting up physical tasks and then having them rewarded by completing each task or depending on how much they do.
I also teach Marine Studies and the students could use Zombie Based Learning by setting up their own Marine Environment.
